Day to Day Itinerary
DAY 1: Meeting in Libreville on flight to Gamba Village
We will meet at the Libreville Airport at 08h00 this morning for our onward 2-hour domestic flight to Gamba. We will then enjoy a scenic boat transfer through the Ndogo Lagoon into the wild southern reaches of Loango National Park. Upon arrival at the remote riverside camp, you will have time to settle in before a detailed orientation outlining the days ahead, safety procedures, and the ecology of the region. If time allows, a gentle introductory walk or boat excursion explores the estuary and adjacent rainforest, focusing on primate activity, birdlife, and the unique interface between forest and water that defines this part of the park.
Day 2: Exploration into Loango National Park
After breakfast, the morning is dedicated to exploring the estuary, travelling quietly by boat or on foot through the lagoon channels and along the water’s edge. This gentle introduction allows time to observe monkeys moving through the canopy, forest elephants visiting the banks, and a wide variety of water and forest birds. In the afternoon, activities shift inland with a guided game drive, birding excursion, or interpretive walk, depending on conditions and wildlife movement. The focus is on reading tracks, understanding animal behaviour, and appreciating the rich diversity of habitats that make Loango such a unique wilderness landscape.
Day 3: Wilderness Trail begins
After breakfast, the morning begins with a comprehensive trail briefing outlining safety protocols, daily routines, and the principles of low-impact travel in this remote environment. A boat transfer then carries the group deeper into Loango National Park to the wilderness trail drop-off point. From here, the 4-night wilderness trail officially begins, with the first day’s walk leading into pristine rainforest and wetland habitats. The pace is steady and unhurried, allowing time to interpret animal tracks, learn about key plant species, and attune to the sounds of the forest as the landscape grows increasingly remote.
Day 4 – 6: Wilderness Trail
These are full days spent deeply immersed in the rainforest while continuing along the wilderness trail, moving through some of the most remote and least explored areas of Loango National Park. Each day unfolds at a natural rhythm, shaped by terrain, wildlife movement, and forest conditions, with routes passing through dense primary forest, swamp forest, and occasional open clearings used by elephants and other wildlife. Time is taken to track animals, interpret fresh signs, and learn about the intricate relationships between plants, insects, birds, and mammals that sustain this ecosystem.
Daily walks are balanced with regular pauses for observation, photography, and discussion, allowing a deeper understanding of the forest’s complexity and scale. Camps are established in carefully selected wild sites each afternoon, using low-impact methods to leave no trace. Evenings are spent around camp preparing meals, sharing experiences from the day, and listening to the sounds of the rainforest after dark, as nocturnal species emerge and the sense of true wilderness becomes most apparent.
Day 7: Wilderness Trail ends
The final day of the 4-night wilderness trail begins after breakfast with a morning hike to the pre-arranged pick-up point, marking the conclusion of the on-foot journey through the rainforest. From here, boats transfer the group back through the waterways, offering a gradual transition from remote wilderness to comfort. The afternoon is free to relax and recover after the trail, whether enjoying the surroundings of camp, reflecting on the experience, or heading out onto the estuary by kayak for gentle exploration and wildlife viewing. In the evening, dinner is followed by a closing session, bringing the journey together with shared reflections on the days spent immersed in Loango’s wild landscapes.
Day 8: Back to Libreville and departure
After an early breakfast, we will depart by boat at approximately 09h00 for the transfer back to the airstrip at Gamba village. The journey offers a final opportunity to take in the waterways and surrounding forest before boarding the scheduled flight back to Libreville. Arrival at Libreville International Airport is expected around 15h00, marking the end of the wilderness experience.
